Web browsing

Glea runs Chromium, the engine inside Chrome, so pages work as they do there. Around it is a Mac app, with the extras you’d expect from a browser.

Settings

Choose Glea ▸ Settings… (⌘,). The Browser pane has vertical tabs, your search engine, and whether the links in your notes open in Glea or in another browser you pick. Changes apply at once.

Make Glea your default browser

Choose Glea in System Settings ▸ Desktop & Dock ▸ Default web browser. Links you click in other apps then open in a tab in Glea.

Incognito windows

Press ⇧⌘N for an incognito window. It’s dark, so you can tell it apart, and starts with no tabs.

  • Cookies and site data are kept in memory and erased when the window closes. Each incognito window starts fresh.
  • Pages aren’t added to your history, aren’t counted in the daily summary, and the window isn’t restored next time.
  • The omnibox leaves out your history and makes no search suggestions, so nothing is sent while you type.
  • Extensions don’t run there.

Downloads, and captures you collect into your notes, are kept. ⌘D switches to your journal and notes there too.

Extensions

Extensions from the Chrome Web Store install and run in Glea. Open the Chrome Web Store in a tab and add them as you would in Chrome.

The puzzle-piece button in the top bar lists your extensions; click one to open its popup. Window ▸ Extensions shows the page to manage them.

Camera, microphone, location and notifications

A site asks before it uses your camera, microphone or location, or sends you notifications, and you answer for that site. The first time, macOS also asks whether Glea may use them.

Passwords

Glea comes with Chrome’s password manager: when you sign in to a site, it offers to save your password, and fills it in the next time. Open chrome://password-manager in a tab to see your saved passwords, add one, or import a CSV file exported from another browser.

Find in page

Press ⌘F and type. ⌘G goes to the next match and ⇧⌘G to the previous one; Esc closes the find bar.

Zoom

⌘= zooms in, ⌘− zooms out, and ⌘0 goes back to the actual size.

Downloads

Files you download are saved in your Downloads folder.

⌘[ goes back, ⌘] forward, ⌘R reloads and ⌘. stops loading. These are also in the top bar and the History and View menus.

Developer tools

Press ⌥⌘I, or choose View ▸ Developer Tools, for Chrome’s developer tools, docked in the window as in Chrome. Right-click a page and choose Inspect Element to go straight to it.

Dock them right, bottom or left, or in their own window, from the Dock side row of their ⋮ menu or from View ▸ Developer Tools. Drag their edge to resize them.

What isn’t there yet

  • Protected video: Netflix and other streaming sites that need DRM don’t play.
  • Sync: Glea doesn’t sync between Macs.
  • Some Google sign-ins refuse browsers that aren’t Chrome.
