Journal and notes

Journal

The journal has a page for every day. Today’s is on top, ready to write in, and the days before are just below it, all editable in place.

The journal, with the daily summary at the top of today’s entry.

Open the journal

  • Press ⇧⌘J, from anywhere in Glea.
  • Or press ⌘D to switch from the web to your notes, then choose Journal in the top bar.
  • Or open the omnibox with ⌘K: Today is in the list before you type anything.

Each day is its own file, journal/2026-10-06.md for instance, in your notes folder. A day you didn’t write in has no file and doesn’t show. The journal shows the last ten days you wrote in; Show earlier days at the bottom brings in ten more.

Writing in the journal

Click anywhere in today’s entry and type. The journal uses the same editor as notes, so everything in Writing in Markdown works here: headings, lists, tasks, tables, math, links to notes.

Earlier days are editable too: click into one to fix a typo or tick off a task. Click a day’s title (Today, or the weekday) to open that day on its own page.

Tip

The journal is a good inbox. Capture into Today as you browse, then link or move what matters into notes later. Type [[ to link a line to a note.

The daily summary

At the top of today’s entry, a card recaps your last active day:

  • Notes you worked on.
  • Pages you read, for 30 seconds or more, with the time you spent on each.
  • Where to pick up: the last note you edited and the longest page you read, unless you’ve gone back to them since.

The card is drawn by Glea and isn’t written into the journal file. Click Hide to put it away until tomorrow.

How reading time is counted

A page counts as read only while Glea is the app in front and you’ve used the keyboard or mouse in the last 90 seconds, so a tab left open over lunch doesn’t count. Nothing is counted in incognito windows.

The record stays on your Mac, in activity.json in Glea’s Application Support folder, and keeps 30 days.

Moving around

The table of contents in the left margin lists the days, with each day’s headings under it. At rest it shows one dash per entry; hover over it to see the titles, and click one to jump there.

In notes mode, ⌘1 opens the journal and ⌘2 All Notes.
