Capture
Point and shoot
Hold ⌥ Option on any page, click what you want to keep, and it lands in today’s journal or a note, as Markdown with a link back to where it came from.
Collect part of a page
- Hold ⌥ Option. The page dims, and a spotlight settles on the block under the pointer: a paragraph, a heading, a list, an image, a table. Move the pointer to choose another.
- Click. The spotlight flashes to show it’s collected.
- Choose where it goes. A small Collect to panel offers Today, your notes, or a new note; type to find a note by name, and press Return. Esc cancels.
To collect text that isn’t a whole block, select it first, then hold ⌥: the spotlight goes to your selection.
If there’s nothing to collect under the pointer, the spotlight shakes.
You can try point and shoot on glea.app in any browser, no install needed.
Capture an area
Hold ⌥ and drag instead of clicking to capture any rectangle of the page as a picture: a chart, part of a map, a piece of a design. It’s saved as a PNG in your notes’ assets/ folder.
Posts and videos
On YouTube, X, Bluesky and Instagram, and wherever their posts or videos are embedded in other pages, the spotlight takes the whole post or video, and it’s collected as an embed: the note plays the video or shows the post.
To collect a post’s text and images instead, hold ⌥⌘ rather than ⌥.
Collect a whole page
- Press ⌘S, or choose File ▸ Collect Page…, to save a link to the page.
- Right-click a page for Collect Selection and Collect Image.
- Right-click a tab group’s name and choose Capture Group to Today to keep links to all its tabs in today’s journal.
What a capture looks like
Captures are turned into Markdown, keeping headings, lists, links, code, tables and images, and leaving out clutter such as citation markers. Each one is added to the end of the entry or note as a quote with a link to its source:
> The heron stands motionless in shallow water,
> waiting for fish to come within reach.
>
> — [Grey heron - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_heron)
Images are downloaded into assets/, so they stay in your notes even if the page changes or goes away.
Where it doesn’t work
- Point and shoot works in a page’s main content, not inside frames embedded in it (iframes).
- An area capture takes what’s visible in the window; scroll first to bring the area into view.
To collect from Safari, Chrome, Firefox and other browsers, use Glea Clipper.
