Journal and notes
Notes and links
Notes are pages you keep: a topic, a project, a person, a reading list. Link them to each other with [[double brackets]], and every note shows what links back to it.

Create a note
- Press ⌥⌘N. A new note opens with its title ready to type; press Return to start writing.
- Or type a name in the omnibox (⌘K) and choose Create Note, or press ⇧⌘↩.
- Or click + in All Notes.
- Or link to a note that doesn’t exist yet, and click the link: Glea creates it.
A note’s title is its file name: Reading list is notes/Reading list.md. A new note you leave without writing in isn’t kept.
Link notes together
Type [[ anywhere. A menu lists your notes as you type their name; choose one with the arrow keys and Return, or keep typing a new name and close the brackets.
Finished [[The Left Hand of Darkness]], next on my [[Reading list]].
Links show as clickable text. Click one to open the note, or ⌘-click to open web links in a background tab.
Web links in your notes open in a tab in Glea. To open them in another browser instead, turn on Open links in another browser in Glea ▸ Settings ▸ Browser and pick the browser. Links in the pages you browse in Glea still open in its tabs.
Link to a heading or a block
[[Note#Heading]]opens a note at a heading. After[[Note#, the menu lists that note’s headings.[[Note#^block]]opens it at a paragraph or list item. After#^, the menu lists its blocks; choosing one that has no id gives it one.[[#Heading]]links to a heading in the same note.[[Note|text]]shows text in place of the note’s name.
Linked references
Below every note, Linked references, with their count, lists the notes and journal days that link to it, each with the line the link is in. Click a source’s name to go there.
Unlinked references
Under the backlinks, a folded section lists places where the note’s name appears as plain text, without a link: whole words only, not inside code or other links. Unfold it, then:
- Link turns one mention into a
[[link]]. - Link All does every mention in that note at once.
Rename a note
Click the note’s title, type the new name and press Return (Esc puts the old one back). Glea renames the file and updates every [[link]] to it, in all your notes and journal days.
Tags
Write #tag anywhere in a note, or #nested/tag for a tag inside another. Typing # and a letter offers the tags you’ve already used.
Tags are links: click one to list every note that has it. Searching #tag in All Notes does the same. Tags in a note’s frontmatter count too.
All Notes
Press ⇧⌘H, or choose All Notes in the top bar in notes mode, for the list of your notes. The search field at its top filters them as you type.
Groups
Groups keep related notes together in the list. Each group is a folder inside notes/, so they look the same in Finder.
- Make a group by dragging one note onto another, then name it.
- Move a note by dragging it into a group, or out of one; or choose Move to Group from the note’s ⋮ menu.
- Collapse a group with the chevron by its name, and jump to one from the table of contents in the margin.
- Rename or delete a group by right-clicking its name. Deleting a group keeps its notes; they move out of it.
Delete notes
- In a note, press ⌥⌘⌫ or click the trash button by its title.
- In All Notes, tick several notes’ checkboxes and click the trash button that appears; or choose Move to Trash… from one note’s ⋮ menu.
Glea asks first, then moves the files to the macOS Trash, so you can put them back from there.
