Journal and notes
Images and embeds
Notes can hold more than text: pictures, videos, sounds and PDFs, videos and posts from the web, and even other notes, all shown in place.
Add an image or a file
- Drag a file from Finder or another app into a note.
- Paste an image you’ve copied.
- Or type
/imageand choose Image, Video, Sound or PDF to pick a file.
Images you drop or paste are saved in the assets/ folder of your notes, and the note links to them with Markdown, like . Images on the web can stay where they are: shows them too.
Videos and sounds get a player; PDFs show their pages, which you can scroll in the note.
Resize images, videos and PDFs
Hover over one and drag the handle on its right edge. The width is written into the Markdown, as or ![[file.png|300]]; drag back to full width to remove it.
Embed from the web
Paste a link on a line of its own, or use /embed, and Glea shows what it points to: the video plays and the post shows in the note.
This works for YouTube, Vimeo, Loom, TED, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, X, Bluesky, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, Figma, CodePen, GitHub Gists, Flickr and Giphy. embeds the same way.
Embeds are loaded from the service that hosts them, as they would be on a web page. See Privacy.
Embed a note in another
Write ![[Note]] to show a whole note in place, or ![[Note#Heading]] for one section of it. The embed is drawn like the note itself (tables, math, media and all) and follows its edits as you make them. Click its name above it to open it.
Type /embedded note to pick one from a menu.
Files by name
Obsidian’s way of embedding files works too: ![[photo.png]], ![[clip.mp4]] or ![[paper.pdf]] finds the file by its name anywhere in your notes folder. Add |300 to set its width, as in ![[photo.png|300]].
