Glea Clipper

Glea Clipper is a browser extension that collects into Glea from your other browsers: Safari, Chrome, Edge, Arc, Brave and Firefox. It brings point and shoot with it.

Install it

Safari

Glea Clipper for Safari comes with Glea. Open Glea once, then:

  1. In Safari, choose Safari ▸ Settings, then click Extensions.
  2. Tick Glea Clipper.
  3. Allow it on all websites, so point and shoot is ready on every page.

Firefox

Open Glea Clipper on Firefox Add-ons and click Add to Firefox.

Chrome, Edge, Arc and Brave

Open Glea Clipper on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. Edge, Arc and Brave install it from the Chrome Web Store too.

Note

The first time you collect from a site, Chrome asks whether to open Glea. Tick Always allow so it doesn’t ask each time.

Point and shoot in other browsers

It works as it does in Glea: hold ⌥ Option, and a spotlight lands on the block under the pointer.

  • Click to collect the block, or drag to capture an area as a picture.
  • With text selected, ⌥ collects the selection at once.
  • Hold ⌥⌘ to collect posts and videos as text rather than embeds.

A flash shows what was collected. ⌥ does nothing while you’re typing in a field, so it still types characters there.

Click Glea Clipper’s button in the toolbar, or press ⌥⇧G, to collect:

  • Selection: the text you’ve selected.
  • Article: the page’s main content, without menus, share buttons or comments. It becomes the body of a note, under a link to its source.
  • Link: just the page’s title and address.

Then choose where it goes: Today’s journal, a new note (named after the page unless you change it), or Choose in Glea, which opens Glea’s own Collect to panel, and click Collect. Tick Open Glea afterwards to see where it went; otherwise you stay in your browser. Both choices are kept for next time.

  • Right-click a page, a selection, an image or a link for Collect Page to Glea, Clip Article to Glea, Collect Selection to Glea, Collect Image to Glea or Collect Link to Glea.
  • ⌥⇧S collects the selection, or the page’s link when nothing is selected.

These, and point and shoot, go where the toolbar button says, and open Glea if Open Glea afterwards is ticked. With new note, the note is named after the page.

How it reaches Glea

The extension turns what you collect into Markdown and hands it to Glea on the same Mac, through a glea:// link. If Glea isn’t running, macOS opens it. Nothing goes through a server. Captures look like Glea’s own, and their images are downloaded into assets/.

Glea only ever adds captures from these links; it never replaces or deletes anything.

Known limitations

  • Finding a page’s article is a best guess, and some layouts need you to select the text instead.
  • Pages that browsers don’t let extensions touch, such as their stores, settings and built-in PDF viewer, can only be collected as a link.
